Additional ways to update your kitchen

Painting the Walls

Paint is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to update your kitchen. You may need to prime the walls first before you can apply a new colour especially if it is a bold retro colour.  Pure white can give your kitchen a fresh, modern look.  Alternatively you might opt for a light blue to add a calm tranquil look. Beige is also very popular especially with wood cabinets or countertops.

Replacing tiles for flooring

A relatively inexpensive way to update the look of your kitchen is by installing lino or laminate floors. These floors are durable, easy to clean, and can be installed without professional help. They also present a fresh, clean look.

Lighting

Lighting fixtures can be costly, you can get relatively inexpensive ones that will be just as effective at lighting your kitchen and will be a huge improvement on older lighting fixtures.  Many people are changing their existing halogen 50w downlights to energy saving 3w energy saving LED spotlights and adding under counter lighting.  Please note that any changes to your lighting should be carried out by an qualified registered electrician.

Adding a backsplash or tiles to the walls

Simply by adding some mosaic tiles behind the hob or sink can really improve the look of your kitchen. The use of small square mirrors is also a good way to make a small kitchen appear larger.  Additionally the use of framed photographs or prints, hung closely together, is a good way to add visual interest to your kitchen.

Storage

Kitchen storage is important and baskets, tins, and plastic bins can really help keep the space organized. You may want to consider using these containers even if all of your kitchen goodies lie behind closed cabinet doors.
